Something your customers often wonder about

The idea of an “alpha dog” is one of the biggest misunderstandings in dog training.

The old theory came from studies of unrelated wolves kept together in captivity. Researchers observed fights and competition and assumed wolves naturally formed strict dominance hierarchies with an “alpha” forcing others into submission. Later research, especially by wolf biologist David Mech, showed wild wolf packs are usually family units—parents and offspring—not groups constantly battling for rank.

What training methods do you use?

At Wag Theory, we use science-based, positive reinforcement training. We reward the behaviors we want to see, helping dogs learn through trust, clear communication, and consistency—not fear, pain, or intimidation.

What types of dogs do you work with?

We work with puppies, adolescents, adult dogs, and senior dogs of all breeds, sizes, and backgrounds.

How long will it take to train my dog?

Every dog learns at a different pace. Progress depends on the dog’s history, temperament, environment, and how consistently the training plan is followed at home.

Do you guarantee results?

No ethical trainer can guarantee results because training depends heavily on owner participation and consistency. We guarantee our commitment to providing the knowledge, coaching, and support needed to help you succeed.

How old should my puppy be before training starts?

The earlier, the better. Puppies can begin learning as soon as they come home, with age-appropriate socialization and training.

Are vaccinations required?

Yes. We recommend dogs be current on age-appropriate vaccinations before participating in training sessions, especially if they will be around other dogs.

Will you train my dog or teach me?

Both. We teach your dog new skills while also coaching you on how to maintain and strengthen those behaviors at home.

How often should we practice?

Short, frequent sessions work best. We typically recommend practicing 5–10 minutes, 2–4 times per day.

What should I bring to training?

Please bring:

  • Your dog’s favorite treats
  • A standard 4–6 foot leash
  • A comfortable harness or flat collar
  • Water
  • A favorite toy (if motivating)
  • Any medications your dog may need

What if my dog isn’t food motivated?

No problem. We can use toys, play, praise, life rewards, or other motivators that are meaningful to your dog.

Do you use shock, prong, or choke collars?

No. Wag Theory is committed to force-free, positive reinforcement training and does not use or recommend aversive training equipment.

Can you help with fearful or anxious dogs?

Absolutely. Building confidence is one of our specialties. We use gradual exposure, positive associations, and confidence-building exercises to help dogs feel safe and successful.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes. Private lessons provide one-on-one coaching tailored specifically to your dog’s needs and your goals.

Do you travel to clients’ homes?

Yes, depending on your service area. We also offer training in public locations when appropriate for your dog’s goals.

What happens during the first session?

Your first session includes:

  • A behavior assessment
  • Discussion of your goals
  • Training plan development
  • Hands-on coaching
  • Homework to practice before the next session

What if my dog has accidents or gets distracted?

That’s completely normal. Dogs learn best at their own pace, and we adjust each session to set them up for success.

What makes Wag Theory different?
